Elizabeth had almost not even realized he said it at first, that was how sudden it came out of his mouth. She froze almost instantly, feeling a welling of panic start to bloom in her. He had seen it? Of course he had, even in the darkness, it had been hard to miss.
There was a moment she considered lying. It passed just as quickly - she did her best to lie by omission. If she sidestepped this, it would be an outright lie. Newt had always been kind to her. He didn't deserve that, even if he probably wouldn't believe her if she tried to brush it off anyway.
"Not so loud!" she pleaded in a quiet voice, glancing around. No one seemed to be out, which was the only saving grace at the moment. Clearing her throat, she looked him square in the eye. "Walk with me?"
